The five types of lip characteristics are: short vertical lines or grooves, long vertical lines or grooves, diamond shaped grooves, branching grooves, and rectangular grooves. Lip characteristics and identification is important to identify criminals or citizens. One of the first things investigators look for are fingerprints, footprints, tire prints, and even lip prints. Like fingerprints, lip prints have no two lips that are exactly the same. The study of lips is called cheiloscopy. When lifting the print, the investigator spreads talcum powder over the print with a soft brush.

Supplies: You will need a pencil, tape, and a piece of paper.
Steps: First, you need your piece of paper. Rub a pencil on it's side in a corner of your paper. Then in the middle of the paper draw enough squares for all your fingers. Get ten small pieces of tape. Once done, rub your finger on the pencil shade. Next you put tape on the fingers you rubbed. Then, put the tape on the boxes. Finally, you name the design on the fingerprint. The names are:Plain Whorl, Double Loop Whorl, Accidental Whorl, Central Pocket Whorl, Ulnar Loop, Radial Loop, Tented Arch, and Plain Arch.
