Today we had a mystery skype with a ranger from Yellowstone National Park. We first had to find out where she was by asking her questions using our maps. Once we figured it out she taught us about the history of Yellowstone National Park. Some of the things we learned are: - People think that Yellowstone is going to explode because it is on top of a volcano. The magma is only 3 miles under the ground. The magma where we are is about 30 miles under the ground. There is a website where you can see all of the volcanic activity and earthquakes. - Old Faithful erupts at 60 or 90 minute intervals depending on how long the eruption lasts. You can watch it from a live webcam. There is a geyser named Steamboat that erupts up to 300 feet high, but no one knows when it will erupt. - on March 1st, 1872 Congress made Yellowstone the first National Park. The first people to find Yellowstone were Native Americans. About 27 tribes lived in the area. The government sent a photographer and an artist to see if Yellowstone was really as important as people said it was. - When Yellowstone first became a National Park there were only 25 Bison. Today, there are over 4,000 Bison. If a Bison is in the road, leave it alone and don't get too close to it. If a Bison is on the road, you can use correct grammar and call it a Bisonjam. - They have a spring called Mammoth Springs. Some bacteria builds up and makes mats which are the colorful areas around the boiling springs. - Yellowstone is important because of its unique land like the geysers, hot springs, canyons, and other natural features. - Yellowstone is located in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. - Right now it is negative 12 degrees. That is 50 degrees colder than where we are. They are around 5,000 feet above sea level while we are about 55 feet above sea level. Please look at the pictures and videos from our Skype session below.
