Canopic jars are jars certain organs go into when being removed from a body being mummified to go to the Afterlife. There are four types of Canopic Jars:
1.Insety the human headed god guards the liver. 2.Hapy the baboon headed god guards the lungs. 3.Duamutef the jackel headed god guards the stomach. 4.Qebehsenuef the falcon headed god guards the intestines. The jars represent the Sons of Horus. Over the years the embalming has changed and the embalmers began putting the organs back in the bodies after the organs were dried in natron. However, the wood or stone Canopic Jars were still buried with the people simply to protect the organs. Sophie and Nick

Pharaohs have been around for about 300 years. Pharaohs are the rulers of Egypt. The word pharaohs means the title of Ancient Egyptian kings. Some pharaohs are Nefertiti, Cleopatra, Tutankhamun, Menes, Khufu, and Narmer. Nefertiti and Cleopatra are known to be the most beautiful pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. Narmer is the same person as Menes. Menes is probably King Narmer's funeral name. King Tutankhamun is mainly known for his intact tomb discovered in 1922.

How Egyptians Mummify Important People 1. Stick a needle up the nose to cut the brain into pieces 2. Remove the pieces of brain 3.Make a small cut in the left side of the stomach 4. Remove the internal organs 5.Place certain organs in certain canopic jars 6.Place the heart back inside the body 7.Clean the inside and outside of the body with wine and spices 8.Cover the body with natron (salt). 9. Wait seventy days. 10.Wrap the body, head to toe, in bandages 11.Place the body in a sarcophagus (a coffin) If the person happened to be a pharaoh, he will be placed in a special burial with many treasures, due to Egyptians believing he will need the items in the afterlife. Egyptians mummified people because they believed if they left the bodies to decompose, they would not be able to go into the afterlife. -Hayden and Brixton This week Cleopatra introduced us to our new unit on Ancient Egypt! We started out by learning about Egypt, Egyptian math, and the mummification process. Check out the pictures as we rotated through stations solving math problems, creating our own Egyptian word problems, making pop up books with facts, and mummifying our dead Pharaohs. |
