Today we learned about microscopes. We made diagrams of its parts in our journals. We then learned how to use two different types of microscopes. On the compound microscope we looked at different fabrics. On the handheld microscope we looked at things around the room. Here are some of our observations:

Do you know what chromatography is? Ask one of us!
This week we compared chromatography results when using different solvents. The two solvents we used were alcohol and water. We learned that water and alcohol have similar results, although the lines in the alcohol might appear bright or more distinct. Chromatography is the separation of a mixture. We are going to learn how to use chromatography to separate the colors in black ink.
In our chromatography experiment, we tried to find out which mystery pen wrote our note. We learned that it was pen B because had the same colors as our note. It had pink at the top like our note did. Pens A and E had a lot of purple in their ink. Pens C and D did not separate at all. Those two pens were permanent ink so we could not separate the ink. We learned that ink is made of all different colors. You can see the pictures of our experiment below. Today we learned about "Teeth Impressions" or "Bite Impressions."
