We took our first and second grade students on a field trip to the Discovery Science Place to learn about the human body! Have a look at the great time the students had!

We are studying different systems of the body. We first learned about the Nervous System. The three parts of the nervous system are the spinal cord, nerves, and the brain. We learned that there are nerves throughout our body. These nerves send messages to our brains to let us know what our five senses see, hear, touch, smell, or taste. We learned that your fingers and your face have more nerves so they are more sensitive to touch. We did stations to learn more about our five senses. At one station we touched things inside of bags to guess what they were without looking. At another station we shook eggs to use our sense of hearing to see what was inside. At the last station we got to taste different foods. We learned that your tongue can only taste five flavors. They are: bitter (like unsweetened chocolate, vitamins or coffee), sweet (like m&ms or candy), sour (like lemons), salty (like pretzels), and umami (like meat or ripe tomatoes). We learned that the nervous system and our five senses keep us safe. Our brain tells us what to do. For example, the sense of sight keeps you safe from strangers or falling in a hole. You can hear when a car is coming and your brain will tell you to stop. Our sense of smell can warn us that there is a fire if we smell smoke. These are just a few ways our 5 senses keep us safe. Cleopatra, the last Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, introduced us to our new unit on Egypt! Today we learned about hieroglyphics and cartouches. Hieroglyphics are the symbols they used to write with. A cartouche is a metal oval encircled in rope that showed the name of Pharaoh. We created our own cartouches on paper and then made them out of clay and put our names in them.
Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to our open house! I know the kids had a blast sharing their roller coasters with you! I hope you got a glimpse of their learning as well! |
